In wastewater treatment, slaked lime is used as a flocculant to treat water and wastewater thanks to the chemical properties that it can react with acids and corrode some metals present in water. It helps neutralize acids produced in the industrial waste, thereby impeding corrosion and protecting the natural environment. Lime softens water by removing bicarbonate and disinfects bacteria. It also removes silicon, manganese, fluoride, iron and other impurities from the water.
Ca(OH)2 is used to supplement biological calcium for the animals living in reef tanks and requiring a lot of calcium, such as algae, snails, hard tube worms and corals. It is also used to produce drugs to prevent the rotting of vegetables and fruits during storage, etc.
Ca(OH)2 is a chemical widely used in agriculture. Agricultural soil is acidic as it is contaminated with alum (mainly made of acid residue). Thanks to calcium hydroxide’s strong basic properties, it helps reduce and neutralize pH, remove alum, reduce soil acidity, thus improving acidic soil. Ca(OH)2 is also a component of a number of agrochemicals and other pesticides.
